It doesn’t come as a surprise that the American Kennel Club (AKC) highly recommends obedience training for dogs and puppies. These canine companions are sources of great joy and can bring their owners years of love and happiness. Yet a well-behaved dog takes this experience to the next level and sometimes you might even think a person is inside that four-legged body.
Not to mention a trained dog makes having it in your life that much easier. And this goes beyond owners as good canine citizens mean less worry of attacking another animal or even worse, a person. You want to take steps to protect your dog and training is one of these steps.
The Puptown Difference
If you live in or near The Woodlands, Texas, you have the good fortune of bringing your dog to Puptown Houston for the best in puppy and dog training. We offer a different approach to training as we teach our students in more real-world circumstances than the confines of a ring.
Our programs are unique and personalized as we understand that every dog is different and has different learning styles. Hence we do not have a “one size fits all” approach when it comes to training. Thanks to one of a kind method such as our doggy day camp and lodge and learn programs, you can rest assured that by leaving your precious pup in our capable hands, you will have a beautifully behaved pup in no time at all.
Obedience training also develops socialization in dogs. Your dog will most likely be facing a multitude of people, places, and situations in their life and needs to be prepared for the outside world. Puptown trainers, with owner’s permission, will take your dog to several different places where they will encounter a variety of people, situations, and other animals. Socialization cannot be taught in a ring which is why Puptown exposes dogs to real-world situations as part of their training. And we don’t just train pets, we train their owners too so they can continue to work with their dog and home and understand what their canine company specifically needs to learn necessary behaviors.
A Crucial Time
Even the oldest of dogs can learn new tricks, which is why we welcome and successfully train dogs of all ages. Yet Puptown’s puppy training specialists start working with dogs as young as six weeks, and all training is done off leash! At around this time dogs go through an imprinting age, that is, a period that everything they learn will stay with them for the rest of their lives. This is the peak time to teach your puppy basic obedience commands, socializations skills, good manners, house etiquette, and even agility training.
Recommendations From an Authority
Puptown’s training philosophy falls directly in line with AKC obedience recommendations. These are obedience training not just for basic commands but also to prevent and correct nuisance behaviors such as jumping on people, digging, excessive barking, and chewing. Rather than negative reinforcement the AKC recommends overcoming these behaviors by providing physical and mental activities for your dog. Training truly deepens the bond between a dog and their owner plus helps to ensure a dog’s safety and happiness while nurturing better companionship.
Our training methods include our immensely popular lodge and learn program which gives your pup the experience of “doggy day camp” while being trained with positive reinforcement methods and sharing the company of other dogs. Our minimum recommended stay for puppies is 10 days which includes two private training lessons. We will also take them on different “vacations” like to parks, stores, and other dog-friendly areas to teach them how to be polite and well-mannered in a variety of different situations.
Learning should be versatile, realistic, and practical rather than taking place entirely in an isolated training ring. We strive to familiarize puppies with a variety of environments and distractions, which can also help in identifying and overcoming any fears of phobias in dogs.
