Our Dog Training Philosophy
Each dog is unique, and should be trained to match their specific needs, according to our dog training philosophy. Each dog should be evaluated to identify the best path of development for its success. We eliminate the cookie-cutter approach in favor of examining your dog’s genuine training needs.
Our dog training methodology is based on three basic principles. These are the essential components of behavior modification. This is true whether you are teaching your family pet or a police canine to detect drugs. Understanding how these principles work is essential for successful communication with your dog.
Three Pillars of Dog Training
First and most importantly, time is crucial in dog training. It has to do with how a dog’s brain processes cause and consequence. Any action shown by a dog must be followed by a reward or consequence within 1.3 seconds in order for the dog to associate that behavior with that reward or consequence. As a result, far too often, people praise or chastise a dog long after the behavior has happened. Assist your dog in connecting the dots regarding whatever activity you were praising.
Consistency is the second pillar of our dog training philosophy. This enables the dog and owner to effectively communicate. It requires reacting fast and consistently to any critical behavior that you want to encourage or discourage. Dogs don’t understand why you don’t want them jumping on you as you carry in the groceries. To be understood by the dog, praise or reprimand must occur within 1.3 seconds of the identical behavior.
Understanding what motivates your dog is the last foundation of our dog training philosophy. This is how you can influence your dog’s decision-making. There are two types of motivation: positive and negative. If your dog comes to you when you call him, make sure you positively encourage that behavior. You may do this by praising, petting, or rewarding them. If your dog climbs all over you, provide an incredibly clear negative incentive by ignoring the dog, withholding affection, or sternly shouting no.
Teaching your dog will be straightforward and gradual if you use these three core concepts. Our trainers provide free evaluations and are happy to answer any questions you may have.
